Life Skills and Basic Skills
How do students benefit from the courses?
This course helps students to feel more confident, it also helps them to become more independent. On the course, students learn daily living skills and how to achieve their goals in life.
At the beginning
Everyone is different so the tutor gets to know the students over the first 2/3 weeks, talking about their interests, needs and goals before writing their learning plan with them. This includes the student's learning style. Progress is reviewed regularly with the tutor.
What we do
Basic Skills including Numeracy, Literacy and Communication
The Basic Skills course is for students who want to improve their numeracy, literacy and communication skills. The subject is taught at a number of levels, from Pre-Entry through to Entry Level 3. The course can help students to feel ready to go on to study other courses at SHARE or at College. It also helps students to feel more confident to live more independently.
The teaching style adopted at SHARE uses real life settings to deliver adult basic skills lessons. When working on writing sklills, students are developing their CVs or completing application forms, and when studying numeracy, students are learning about using money and managing finances, for example.
Life Skills and Independent Living
Students learn about looking after themselves, personal hygiene, using public transport, preparing simple food and drinks, handling money, and other things that help people live independently.
Workshops
We do a variety of arts activities. These include arts and crafts workshops - for example - making mosaics, doing pottery, painting and creative writing. We also go on visits and outings - for example, to the Wandsworth Museum. Students often find new ways of enjoying and expressing themselves through these activities.
