Students taking part in a Zoom session

The closure of our sites means we’re finding new ways to teach and students are trying out new ways to learn. Like many organisations at present, we’ve turned to Zoom to interact with each other and staff and students are loving it! This is helping students develop their digital skills as they navigate the process of how to receive and take part in video calls. In such uncertain times, connecting with other people is incredibly important. Allowing students to engage with tutors and each other injects a level of happiness and purpose.

We run our regular pastoral sessions, where we talk about the weather and what everyone’s been doing, and we also continue learning about regular session topics.

Andre talking us through the weather for the week:

Brandon showing us some artwork he’s been doing which coincided with the session topic ‘coping skills’:

Danny, Derek and Donna joined us from their house where they’ve been keeping busy sewing, baking and going for walks:

We’ve even run step-by-step Zoom cooking sessions with Kenny, our chef tutor, taking students through recipes like Spaghetti Bolognese!

And here's the finished result from Alastair!

'Alastair really enjoyed cooking with Kenny and the others today, thanks for all your help'

- Diane, Alastair's mum

We’ve been so pleased to receive such positive and encouraging feedback.

‘It's so nice to receive these weekly calls, during this time it can feel like people have forgotten about you but hearing from you is nice and has been so helpful.’Naomi, parent

‘Today the zoom meeting went well, I enjoyed being involved in the meeting and give it ten out of ten, I want more if possible please.’Gary, student

‘It was a great idea. Andre and I are very happy. Now with Zoom meeting videos he has some rules, something to make him know he has to hurry, shower, have breakfast, brush his teeth and be ready at 11am for the meeting through video Zoom. When it's over, I feel like he gets more excited to do other things during the day. He doesn't get like before, bored.’Paula, parent

‘I am having a good session at Zoom’Ella, student

'Thank you for the excellent cookery session that took place on Friday 29th May. I would also like to compliment you on the delicious recipe for the chicken and leek pie. The sauce was absolutely yummy and my whole family thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Simone is loving the sessions and has a real sense of achievement when she completes them and sees how everyone enjoys what she has cooked. She looks forward to each lesson and it has now become a routine for her to cook the family meal on Fridays.' - Julia, parent
