Share learning moves outdoors

We’re so grateful for our wonderful garden in Tooting that has helped us ease out of lockdown. Our 2.5 acre site in the grounds of Springfield Hospital has enabled us to provide face-to-face sessions for our students in a beautiful open space where social distancing can be observed.

Before the pandemic the Share garden was mainly used for our horticulture training programme as well as housing our social enterprise, Share Nurseries. But lockdown has prompted new opportunities and we’ve realised the potential of the garden by bringing many learning sessions outdoors. We’ve been able to transfer much of the teaching that usually happens in Share’s main building to our large garden site which is fully equipped for students' needs, even featuring marquees for protection from the sun and rain.

After such a long time spent at home during lockdown when mental health has suffered and many students have felt isolated and anxious, reconnecting with friends and staff in a tranquil horticultural setting has been immensely therapeutic.

Students have enjoyed taking part in arts and independent living sessions. The happy faces and smiles say it all, there’s no better place to be on a sunny day!
