Carers week – making carers visible and valued

Make caring visible and valued

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

With so many local services disrupted due to the pandemic, the past year has been particularly challenging for unpaid carers. In November it was reported that care provided by families was valued at £135 billion over course of the pandemic. We’d like to recognise and celebrate the invaluable role played by all carers of students at Share. In celebration we’re sending out thank you cards, edible gifts produced by our catering team, and plants from the Share garden.

Thanks to Big Lottery funding we now have dedicated Family Liaison Officers who provide ongoing support to our students’ families and carers. The services include signposting or referrals to other agencies like social services, advice and advocacy services, as well as community activities. We also reassure and encourage carers to support students’ to put into practice the independent living skills they’re learning at Share. Families and carers help lead the service through regular feedback sessions, ensuring that it meets their individual needs and expectations.
