My Community and Me goes online with The National Archives

Our community based project has been temporarily renamed My ‘Online’ Community and Me as we’re now running virtually. Last week we were delighted to welcome Michael Mahoney from The National Archives, having previously worked with his team on a project called This is Our Park. We’ve been working with Michael to find ways for students to explore The National Archives during lockdown. The team have developed Zoom sessions about national treasures and we recently learnt about the Domesday book and how the national census began.

Students were able to ask questions and find out what kings and barons did and how to answer the census. Michael from The National Archives said, ‘In collaboration with Alice at Share I was delighted to deliver a TNA Treasures session on Zoom. The group were engaged from the first minute as I wanted to explain how this year’s national census was a bit like Britain’s first census –the Domesday Book of 1086. We used images of the Domesday, a short video and concluded with a quiz which the students seemed to enjoy!’

We’re looking forward to future sessions including learning about the Magna Carta. We're so grateful that even during lockdown we can still connect and collaborate with organisations like The National Archives giving access to valuable and inspiring historical collections.
