Our students learn about health checks

Veneshia learning about blood pressure

Sadly, health inequalities exist for disabled people and the statistics are shocking.

“On average, the life expectancy of women with a learning disability is 18 years shorter than for women in the general population; and the life expectancy of men with a learning disability is 14 years shorter than for men in the general population (NHS Digital 2017).”

Recently our Lambeth students went along to the Lambeth Learning Disability Forum. The focus was learning how to take control of their own health and wellbeing. Chris and Veneshia had the chance to take their blood pressure and weigh themselves to help understand what happens at annual health checks.

At Share we’re passionate about helping our students live healthier, happier lives. An important step towards independence is understanding how to access health services. Attending events like these and demystifying what happens at health checks helps them build confidence and learn about staying healthy.
