Alex: volunteering with our Out and About programme

Out and About is a programme at Share that helps students build confidence and independence while learning to navigate community spaces and travel safely in public.

Students develop these skills through local outings to cafés, libraries, museums, shops and green spaces.

Alex volunteered with the group for just over a year and reflected warmly on her experience:

'I loved so many things about it – getting to know the different characters and the challenges that are likely to come up. Learning the way Share’s students and staff adapt to and cope with ups and downs has been inspiring, and it’s been lovely to form consistent relationships with students in the class.

'I got to know them so well, and it made me smile seeing their faces light up when I’d walk into the classroom at the start of the day. It made me feel good that I could help in some way.'

When asked about her favourite memories, Alex said there were too many to choose from:

'Seeing the joy of the students dancing to reggae at the Southbank concerts, experiencing the wonders of the Science Museum, and creating interactive artwork at Tate Britain were all so enriching for both the students and staff.

'Some of the most fun times were spent on Clapham Common playing football — being in goal was quite terrifying as the goals were impossible to save — as well as seeing the students’ amazing skills and joy during basketball and badminton sessions at Battersea Sports Centre.'

Students also shared what Alex’s support meant to them:

'Alex was a kind person and always a happy presence in the classroom. We have great memories of her.' – Shogun

'Alex helped me with my classwork when I found reading and writing difficult. Going on trips with Alex was really fun — especially when we played basketball.' – Chris

'Working with Alex was fun and made me happy.' – Andre

Class tutor Bryher said:

'It was such a joy having Alex in the class. Not only was it helpful having an extra pair of hands, but she built unique and genuine relationships with each student. Alex took the time to get to know their interests and sense of humour, as well as the things they find challenging and the ways they like to be supported.

'She has been a consistently warm, patient and enthusiastic presence in every session.'

Reflecting on her time volunteering, Alex said she 'can’t think of a better way to spend your time.'

Huge thanks for your support, Alex!
