Nathalie and Monica: a befriending story
I’ve found my time as a befriender enormously fulfilling and it’s been so amazing to get to know Monica. I feel like I’m making a difference in her life. I’ve also enjoyed meeting the staff and other volunteers at Share.
Monica and I usually go for an ice cream or hot chocolate (depending on the time of year), and then do some shopping. We sometimes do more adventurous trips: the cinema, paddle park, aquarium and London Eye. Monica’s mum discusses with her what she’d like to do, and we work out what will work logistically.
I’ve seen Monica really open up, and become more talkative and self-assured. Her skills in planning her purchases to stay within her budget, and confidently ordering food have improved.
Monica’s mum has told me that Monica looks forward to our trips, and really enjoys them. This year Monica gave me a birthday card with the message, 'Thank you for helping me and taking me out every Monday. I really enjoy spending time with you.'
