Inclusive football training sessions with Chelsea FC

Share students have been improving their fitness levels, confidence and overall wellbeing, as well as having lots of fun taking part in six training sessions delivered in partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation.

A group of 18 students regularly travelled to the Enable football pitch at Battersea Leisure Centre during the summer, practising their journey planning and independent travelling skills in the process. Once there, the group learnt football skills from qualified coaches like Tony, who adapted the sessions to our students’ abilities and communication styles, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. We’ve seen an increase in our students’ confidence, ability to express themselves, and general fitness and wellbeing.

Bringing people together in community activities like this has encouraged them to get active, and given a boost to mental health. One of our students struggles with anxiety when going out and taking part in new things, but he likes football, and wanted to attend. He came to every session and told us, 'It is my best day of the week'. He proved to be a great team player, taking a lead role supporting his peers to learn new skills.

The sessions culminated in a tournament and awards ceremony celebrating everyone's achievements. Our students were also thrilled to be invited to a private tour of Stamford Bridge, and receive goodie bags!

We plan to create more inclusive sports opportunities for our students, bringing people together to build self-esteem and strengthen community wellbeing.
